Thyme Thymys
An easy care, evergreen herb with year round interest. Attracts butterflies, birds, and bees. Creeping varieties can easily be divided in spring or early fall.
Growing Requirements
Full Sun, Part Shade
Needs sharp drainage. Over watering will impair growth and lead to fungal disease. Very drought tolerant.
Culture & Care
Cut back by 1/2 after flowering to encourage new growth and keep plant from becoming too woody. Divide or replace after 3-4 years.
Varieties
Lemon Thyme
A vigorous, low growing (12-15″) evergreen shrub with small lemon-scented foliage. A good culinary variety (use in any recipe that calls for lemon; makes a flavorful tea. Good in potpourri and sachets. Trim back to keep neat and compact; easily sheared into a tiny hedge.
Coconut Thyme
A low growing variety, spreads quickly, and blooms pink flowers in late spring.
Wedgewood
A low growing, bushy variety with small, variegated orange scented leaves of dark green and chartreuse. Flowers are light lavender.
Doone Valley
Lemon scented creeping thyme with dark green foliage that turns red tints in the winter and becomes gold variegated in the cool of spring. Lavender/pink flower spikes cover in summer. Use in herb gardens, between stepping stones (tolerates light foot traffic), front entryway or around patios to enjoy fragrance. Shear flowers after bloom to maintain flat ground cover. Not a cooking thyme; lemon scent does not hold up as Lemon Thyme does.
Pink Chintz
Deep olive-green wooly foliage, with tiny salmon-pink flowers blooming earlier than other varieties. Has a compact habit, about 1-2″ tall and 18″ wide. Emits a pleasing scent when stepped on. Perfect near entryways and for filling in between pavers, along a garden path or covering a dry slope. Tolerates light traffic between stepping stones.
Elfin
A miniature variety forming a tight solid mat of gray-green foliage. Bloom light pink/purple flowers in summer. A versatile groundcover that will cover dry slopes, fill in between stepping stones (tolerates light foot traffic), or trail over a rock or container; works as a lawn replacement.
