Gaura Gaura lindheimeri
Also known as Whirling Butterflies. An airy plant with white or pink flowers blooming atop long stem late spring through fall. Attracts butterflies and pollinating insects. Semi-evergreen. Makes excellent cut flowers.
Size: 18-36" high x 30-48" wide (depending on variety)
Growing Requirements
Full Sun
Drought tolerant once established due to long taproot. Requires good drainage. Add some organ material to enrich the soil.
Culture & Care
Hard prune in late winter before new growth appears to keep it relatively compact and full; remove half to two-thirds of the stems. May also need a lighter pruning or dead-heading in summer for fall renewal if no longer flowering. Cut back to 8″ in mid season of second year.
Optionally apply a slow-release fertilizer after pruning. And top coat in winter with compost or leaves for winter protection and mild nutrients for spring growth.
